About the Sassafras Sailing Excursions with Captain Wendy

Hello Cassandra!
Thanks again for yet another wonderful stay in your lovely home! It hurt so bad to have to wake up in my own bed. I, of course, will get over it and will look forward to our next stay and visit with you and John as well as Charlie, Max and the rest of the gang!
I will send my regards to Carla Besosa the next time I see her, I understand she may be out of town this week so it will be a second but I will inform her promptly.
Now, after we packed up and left the Great Oak Manor, Mary and I used your easy to follow directions down to the area we were supposed to meet up at right across from the Kitty Knight House. I will say that brick house is burried behind massive trees as is the address marker but a key note to make for spotting it before having to take that bridge u-turn, which is guaranteed to happen with most people is to mention the fact that the entrance to Wendy’s house, located across the street from the Kitty Knight House has a big golden entrance marker on both sides titled “Duck Hollow”. Anyway we got there quite early so we had lunch at the KKH and really enjoyed the food, patio tiki bar atmosphere and friendly service. From there we wandered over to Wendy’s house and were greated by a warm and friendly face that invited us into the back yard to discuss the sailing ins and outs.
Where as our sail boat journey with Captain Enstein out of Rock Hall was more of a ride with the Capt accompanied by music and drinks, this experience was more personal and passionate and hands on. Wendy packed up her own snack pack of cheeses, crackers, dried fruits and grapes and before allowingus to travel with her showed us a map of the Chesapeake, giving us a full on history lesson of the location, fun facts, and picture coded photos of different birds, fish and other wild life to look out for while we were out there. She also ran us through the termonology and meanings behind sailing a Hobie and general sail boating what have you before taking us down to her docking area. She had everything fairly set up for us before arriving and walked us through full set up of the boats. She truly means wear things that can get wet. I suggest you fully emphasize this fact as you literally walk into the water waist up and you do get your hands dirty – I also suggest telling travelers to avoid wearing any expensive jewlery or bringing anything you don’t want to get wet period.Â
Bring a more basic or water proof camera as I wasn’t willing to bring out my Canon Rebel XS for this particular adventure like I did the sail boat journey with Captain Einsten. Wendy was very curtious and once we got out there really let us do our own thing unless we appeared to have any trouble. We stopped on a beach front and had the snacks and spent a solid four hours out on the water, sailing all around the entire bay. Nothing was off limits and once the wind picked up we were really flying. The paddel aspect of these boats and simple switch used to direct ourselves left to right made controlling the boat absolutely the most simplest thing next to learning how to walk on your own two feet. It really is as easy and if not easier than riding a bike. Wendy’s personal stand point and her passion is what makes this excursion so wonderful. She knows everyone on the bay and speaks with locals as she travels and points out all the good spots for siting birds and fish. She knows her animals and she has a good eye as she would spot things way before I could ever see them. For people like me, who grew up in Burke VA my whole life I was blown away by the ammount of Offsprey and Blue Heron out there on the water, they were every where! Really breath taking stuff.Â
The amount of time and personal touches (Instead of a business card at the ending of it all, she gave Mary and I an ornament that she hand makes and paints with her info on the back of it!) is completely worth the feeble price you pay to take on the experience and I highly recommend it to anybody that stops into your Manor – Definitely send them that direction as a matter of fact. When we return, because we were so good with the boats, she is also offering a lower priced return “renting” option where we don’t necessarily need to bring her with us, we just take the boats out and dock them up when were done! She’s even willing to drive or boat down the bay to a closer location from our house if that is something we were interested in! How great is that!
Really wonderful and great recommendation on your part – Thank you so much and please do pass along the positive experience we had as I hope other’s who are interested in the same thing can enjoy the same thing we did.
Hope to see you very soon Cassandra! Look for my review on Trip Advisor soon – Maybe not today but definitely in the next few days.
